Music and Audio: Recording
and Mixing Old Joe Clark
-
day-1: Recording
our five students singing. Composited vocal takes so that
most of the vocals are doubled or tripled. At the end is a solo piano
for "rehearsal" purposes.
-
day-2: More
vocal and percussion overdubs. Three tracks of the girls singing
were added with an emphasis on getting better verse enunciatian.
Boys and the girls added percussion. On the right, the "oohs and
aahs" were looped to provide part of the rhythm of construction.
Reverb was added. On the left, a sampled foot stomp
was placed on beat-2 of every measure (left channel), to which an echo
was added. In addition to Basic Mixing and Editing, the loops and
samples will be used as examples of what is possible during week-3's class.
-
day-3: Learning to Mix
(Rough mix with all tracks ON).
This is the same mix after recording on day-2. After class, I decided
to simplifiy the mix process for the folowing class by tackling all of
the artistic / abstrsact decisions myself and creating a simple submix
of three stereo tracks - piano, vocals and "human percusion." Students
will be given these three tracks with all the automation levels set to
minimum (muted) so they can build the mix from scratch. In the reorganized
JOE CLARK folder "day-4," the fully automated version is called JoeClark-day-4big
and the submixed version is called SimpleJOE-4mute.
-
day-4: Mixing Joe Clark
(Automated mix with effects).
This is a mix with all of the automation required to balance all of the
parts to create a useable submix. My aesthetic goal was to build
the mix by starting with the piano and one vocal track (three live voices).
Each chorus takes advantage of nearly all of the vocal recordings (up to
six tracks, each with 3 to 5 voices). Each student can take a CD
with them shoudl they choose to continue work on the project after class.
