AE-240 Spring 2010

Week-9: Liminal Phase

These mixes were live to 2-track, running at 7 1/2-ips, via UREI graphic EQ and Crane Song STC-8 Limiter.  Minimal in-the-box editing done at transitions.  Thanks to JD, John M, Kevin and Tyler for their hard work, plus KMD for pix (and cable wrap) and AR for video.

Our first 24 track session - we'll likely use no more than 16 tracks for the rhythm tracks, if that.  The main thing to keep in mind is that the demo versions are sketches the artists want to improve upon.  Here is where your instincts as engineer / producer / musician come to play.  My instincts told me that 'Radio' needed a longer into, so I added it with editing.  I also felt the music behind the voice was too dense.  For "Friend," the vocal doesn't seem to fit the track.  If you have ideas, let's first discuss them within the group - diplomacy is keep.  If you can help the musicians either with part suggestions or want to contribute, PLEASE DON'T HOLD BACK, but again be diplomnatic!

Lisa sings, plays Harmonium and Oboe.  David is the guitarist.

Here's hoping that a LIVE recording in our acousticaly exciting space will inspire the players and help the songs achieve their potential.

Week-6: Re-amped Vocal-Verb

The Own Me 4-track session was bounced to to 24-track both as an excuse to learn the machine as well as open up a pair of tracks for stereo reverb.  Even though the entire session was live in the lounge, the vocal mic was remarkably dry - its reverb overwhelmed by the drums and 'electricfied instruments.'  The vocal was routed via AUX SEND to a tape machine (for pre-delay) and then routed to a monitor in the lounge which was captured by a stereo pair of mics.

Kevin W commented,"I loved the overdubbing / reamping of the vocal track reverb!  I really cannot wait to try that!  I feel that it's such a great alternative to using a plug-in or a hardware unit.  It was interesting how the white board was used to separate the monitor from the mic.  I would have never thought of that. Truly one of the cooler things I have learned at this school. "

Week-5: Flanging

We used the 24-track and the four track to ssimulataneosly show how synchronization and flanging are related, by flying two 4-track sessions - the master and the bounce.  We also used the 3M four track to show Abbey Road / Beatles style Automatic Double Tracking (ADT) / Flanging.  Check out the link below...

Week-2: You Really Got Me
Wel surprise, surprise!  Look what we did with no preparation...  Imagine how much more rockin' this could be, because the sounds are all there!

Welcome to the class.  Below are links to one song I was thinking we might cover.  Due to the many influences obvious in the song, I thought we might genre hop - from rock to ska to Mariachi.  Anyone game??  Can anyone tell me where the isolated track came from?
