Week-9: Zed Lep Studio-2 Session
What a great session! I know I learned
a few new tricks this quarter...
With one remaining class, Please read
carefully, and lemme know if there are any typos...
Listen to the track and whatever you
think it needs...
-
if you have musical ideas, do them as homework
offline, then bring a CD next week so we can fly in your parts. Remember
I need rhythm track on one channel and your OD on another chanel.
If you have alot of parts, either submix or do multiple CD tracks with
your parts.
-
if you have production / mixing ideas, please
submit them in advance as part of your written homework assignment.
-
my production ideas are below...
-
I plan on being in super early next Tuesday
to clean up. Anyone that has any free time to make their contributions
in advance is very welcome. I will help you fly in those parts so
most of the actual classtime can focus on mixing.
-
Please let me know who has to leave at 8pm
and who can stay later (and how late) so everyone can have a shot at doing
what interests them most. Please also catch up on writing jsut so
I can get grades in before mentally czeching out for the hollendaize.
-
if there is something you didn't get to do
- or expected to do - please let me know. Your wish is my desire
and all that!
MIX Notes
After quickly setting up the mix, it seemed
to pass the Polk & Altec test. What little mixing was done on
the small Otari speaker - which is why the bass is so 'upfront.'
There are two mixes, with and without vocals. I did multiband processed
versions of each. Let me know how it plays...
Here are my eye-de-yuhs
for our final class!
-
DUB VERSION: Take advantage of
the Reggae aspect of the song (see next idea)
-
Zach's OD'd tremelo gtr makes a mistake during
the solo that I have come to like - only not in the solo. To possibly
fly
that 'mistake' into a part of the song, dropping out almost everything
and letting it spin into echo oblivion.
-
My mistake was not rolling the full multitrack
reel just to have vocal options. I never heard Mike's vocal earlier
on to know what affect multiple takes had on his voice. Would
love to have some cool vocal parts, hoping that Mike would be into
doing this offline - I haven't heard his Yellow Sub vocals but I will get
all that up in a day or two.
The original, below, in several flavors to
tickle your brain. What I think makes this track is that the band did not
adhere to any conventions - except for maybe the piano, which I tried to
bring out in on the processed version. Our week-9 recording sandwiched
in...
Week-8: Zed Lep Rehearsal
Damn this was fun! Please post pix,
and of course, your comments...

Week-6: Bounce Yellow Submarine Edits
to 24 track, overdub bass, acoustic guitar(s), snare, lead and background
vocals and colect sound effects.
Week-5: Yellow Submarine recording
Your homework for week six is to edit the
best takes together (for drums and guitars) so that we can bounce and overdub
on week-6.

Week-4: Flanging, Flying, Singing,
Mixing and Sticky Shed Syndrome
Thanks to Mike Rogers for his wonderful
background work!
Week-3:
A mix of technical, history, listening,
bouncing, mics and mic placement PLUS playing in unfamiliar musical territory.
Thanks to all who participated in the process.
We covered alot of territory. Thanks to Shaun for brining his bass,
and Dillon for his 'pluck' and everyone for their patience and willingness
to explore all of the tangents...
The signal path was: Vin-Jet > Altec
438 > Tape > console > CraneSong Compressor-Limiter >CD burner.
After class, Michael experimented
with various mic combos: SM-7 (All EQ settings), SM-57 (stock), SM-57
transformerless, Vin-Jet and Reslo. Generally speaking the modified
SM-57 fared well, The Vin-Jet and Reslo Ribbons did nicely and we learned
that the SM-7 really wants to be a vocal mic because it's off axis response
is a bit boxey.
Week-2: Paul Flynn session
Please note: For some reason
there was a channel imbalance on the stereo mix, possibly because the compressor-limiter
on the mix buss was not linked. The right channel seems to be compressed/limited
while the left is not. The entire left channel was brought up about
4dB to compensate. PLEASE listen to as many tracks as you can
in order to hear the changes we made during the session and report on the
overall sound.
Week-1: Audio History, Tape Machine
basics, Editing Tape
Well Done! Razors blades for all
and no blood!
For your listening pleasure...
