AE240: Winter 2005

WEEK-5: Friday, 4 february 2005

SUMMARY: To begin to understand the mix process.

On this day we will learn to reamp bass and snare plus attempt a "reference mix" of Green Door.  The latter experience will prepare us for the mid term exam the following week (9th feb), where pairs of students will create and document their own mixes of this track. (any objections?)  Student should be prepared for a written exam and well as a possible "surprise" overdub.

During the process, we will pay particular attention to interpreting the various monitors and their relationship to the room's response.  We'll mix to half-inch two-track and learn to edit.  I would also like to dump all of the songs for our compilation CD into PT to burn the CD.  That seems like enough for one day, eh?

From the mid term forward, I want students to bring in any multitrack session material.  if digital we will bounce to analog multitrack.  We will then evaluate and experiment with that material, a song or two a week.

CAN WE REPEATEDLY HIT THE TARGET?
I can not emphasize enough the importance of documenting your work and of critically listening in and out of class.  The goal is to have a level of familiarity and intimacy with the track so that you can consistently hit the target.  That is, create a mix that plays well on other systems.

In the digital domain, the computer saves all of your documentation; iIn the analog domain, this will be a class responsibility.  EQ and compression settings, specific tracks used (or not used) ballpark relationships of tracks, etc.

GUEST GEEK
If things work out, Julie Gardeski will be working in our room, wiring the ELCO jumpers to facilitate transfers between PT and the multitrack and back - we'll need them for the second half of the semester.  She'll also be doing some basic repairs on the outboard gear as we discovered is needed in the previous week.
