AE-230 / AE-231 Basic
Electronics

While the original title
of this class was Studio Maintenance, the actual goal is
to familiarize the recording angineer with how stuff works. By establishing
a basic knowledge in electronics, students should ultimately be able to
"converse" at the technical level and be able to master basic troubleshooting
concepts, understand the motivation behind preventive maintenance and acquire
the fine motor skills required for soldering and wiring.
This page, the weekly class
index, is not up-to-date, although the week-1 link is an example of how
the information is presented.

CLASS OUTLINE
The class is taught two days a week.
Since electronics is basically a language unto itself, it is admittedtly
hard to start at the beginning. So, each day will be broken into
two parts - part lecture and part lab - so that students can familiarize
themselves with the tangible (components) and the conceptual (formula and
circuit basics).
After the first week of class, each student
will begin building a power supply that will ultimately be used to power
our class project. The project can be simple mic preamp and
direct box, with possible option to add distrotion a la stomp box.
In previous quarters, students built an optical
limiter, but this has proven to be too much to do in too little time.
